Diamantina Accommodation Pousada Serrana Sustainability

Betânia Novaes

Betânia was born in Curvelo, a city about 200 km from Diamantina, but has been living in Diamantina for thirteen years. She used to work in sales and has been working in the Pousada Serrana for one year.

She has seen the progress of Pousada Serrana and likes to deal with the different guests that include sales representatives, students and tourists. She finds the hotel business very rewarding and likes seeing her guests enjoy themselves, especially when they give their feedback and return to the Pousada.

Betânia lives in the Pousada, so she is able to deal with any issues you have during your stay. She has a passion for the region and loves to direct the tourist to the local sites such as Biribiri Village, Curralinho District, Itacolomi Park and Conselheiro Mata.

Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Promoting local culture and heritage.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

At the Pousada Serrana, they are focused on the development of the local regions, people and handicrafts.

Here you can view and purchase traditional works (Vale do Jequitinhonha), found in the Pousada Serrana and "Produtos Caseiros do Vale" store. All of these products are made by "Ribeirinhas" women that live by the Jequitinhonha River. Be sure to ask your host about some of their stories - you will be amazed. The money helps these local women, and also keeps their memory and traditions alive.

They also support the Vila do Arraiolo, which is another group from Diamantina, which helps other women who sew rugs and make other works of art to help them earn income and continue their heritage.
